I Don't Like Weekends
June 06, 2022As I look at the title of this article, I realize how odd that reads. After all, who doesn't like weekends?
I used to like weekends, especially three-day weekends. But since quitting my job this past December, I don't care for them much any more.
I came to this realization a couple of weeks ago as I found I was more restless and bored on weekends than during the week. It wasn't that I had nothing to do on weekends, I do. I just wasn't that interested in doing them. It was as if something was missing or lost when weekends arrived.
Again, it's not that I don't have anything to do. I have this blog platform with a number of projects on the table that have not moved forward. I have a draft book written that needs serious revision. Then there are my outside projects, too many to mention.
But the things I spend a fair amount of time doing during the week are largely not in play on weekends and holidays. I read quite a bit of news, especially financial news. I'm constantly checking markets. My various daily and monthly newsletters come during the week.
So, from an information flow perspective more is happening during the week, which is somehow enjoyable at this point in my post-work era. I also realize how my time can be wasted online but that is a topic for another entry.
My Working Person's Weekend
I haven't worked an 8-5 job in decades, so I've been able to avoid much of the grind that comes from such a life path. Academia is a great life from that perspective - tremendous freedom as to how a day, a week and a career is lived out day by day. Yet, weekends were still looked forward to, as were three day weekends.
Prior to academia, however, I had numerous jobs requiring rather fixed hours of face time.
My colleagues and I would grind out our Monday blues by replaying our weekend activities. We'd look forward to 'hump day' Wednesdays as we moved through each week to get to Fridays. After lunch on Fridays we're all just looking at the clock waiting for the gun to go off so we can join the mad rush out the door to the glorious weekends that awaited us. Our conversations were focused on what we had planned for the weekend.
Our weekends would include going out Friday and/or Saturday nights for food and drink, or cook outs in the backyard, off to sporting events, shopping, movies, you name it. Forget about the job and embrace the weekend.
Interesting now that I think about it.
My Non-Working Person's Weekend
As a non-working person, I enjoy the week more than the weekend.
On weekends my newsfeeds are pretty quiet. The markets are closed. The daily newsletters are read and only summaries or repeats of the prior weeks news are posted.
Stores, bars and restaurants are full and getting a parking spot or seat is challenging. Waiting lists are longer.
During much of the week, these issues are not as evident.
Now, my Monday blues take place on Saturday. Sunday is my hump day, looking forward to my next week.
Interesting now that I think about it.
